Wessing Moves Up to Chair of MOSERS Board

Crystal WessingJefferson City, MO - Effective May 16, 2018, Crystal Wessing assumed the role of Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System (MOSERS). Elected as Vice Chair by the Board of Trustees in January 2018, Ms. Wessing became the Chairwoman upon the recent resignation from state employment of Shannon Owens, former Board Chairwoman. Ms. Wessing was elected to the MOSERS Board of Trustees in 2014 to represent state employees.

Ms. Wessing is very active on all four subcommittees of the MOSERS Board. She is the Chairwoman of both the Pension Administration System and the Strategic Planning & Governance Committees. She also serves on the Investments Committee and Executive Search Committees. “I am honored to accept the role of Chairwoman of the MOSERS Board of Trustees. I look forward to continuing to serve the MOSERS membership and staff in an efficient and transparent manner to promote the financial security of our membership after a career of public service,” Ms. Wessing said.

MOSERS is a public employee retirement system managing approximately $8.5 billion in assets. The system administers retirement (defined benefit and deferred compensation plans), life insurance, and long-term disability benefits for approximately 114,000 state employees, retirees, and beneficiaries. Public pension benefits have a significant and reliable positive impact on state and local economies. MOSERS paid more than $700 million in benefits in FY17 and from that members had $15 million in state taxes and $66.7 million in federal taxes withheld from their benefit payments. Nearly 90% of the benefits paid by MOSERS remains in Missouri. The MOSERS Board of Trustees, chaired by Ms. Wessing, has responsibility for oversight of the management of system assets as well as administration of the system’s benefit programs. The day-to-day management of MOSERS is delegated to the executive director who is hired by the Board.

Ms. Wessing has been a state employee since 2000 and currently serves as the Director of Financial & Administrative Services for the Office of Administration’s (OA) Information Technology Services Division. Previously, she worked as the department budget officer for OA and as an analyst in the Division of Budget & Planning.

Ms. Wessing holds a master’s degree in finance from Jones International University (now part of Trident University International) and a bachelor’s in business administration from Columbia College. She lives in California, Missouri with her husband, John, and daughter, Maggie.
