MOSERS' CIO, Rick Dahl, was presented his Lifetime Achievement award from CIO Magazine at the Industry Innovation Awards on December 3rd.

From the CIO award honoree information:

Rick Dahl's "investment acumen is light years ahead of many of his peers," according to Chris Ailman, CIO of California State Teachers' Retirement System. "His willingness and ability to develop synthetic portfolios and exposure is unique."

Such praise is common for Dahl. Since becoming CIO of Missouri's now-$9 billion pension fund in 1995 at the age of 29, he has transformed MOSERS into a standalone operation separate from the state government, splitting politics from the pension fund. "It was a revolutionary shift," Dahl admits. "It saved us money; it gave us an opportunity to grow our resources."

The self-proclaimed "hard-charging" and "Type-A" CIO forged ahead from early on, revolutionizing first MOSERS' governance structure and then its investments. Following Research Affiliates founder Rob Arnott and economist Peter Bernstein's emphasis on valuation, Dahl began positioning MOSERS closer to the endowment model. He cut equity allocations and added diversification with little sacrificed in returns. He then added a portable alpha portfolio.

Congratulations to Rick!
