Session: FMLA - What Employers Need to Know

What employers need to know to comply with the Family and Medical Leave Act including top employer FMLA mistakes and how to prevent retaliation claims.   

Cathleen A. Martin, Attorney - Newman, Comley & Ruth, P.C.

Cathleen is a shareholder at and past president of the firm Newman, Comley & Ruth, P.C. in Jefferson City.  She is past chair of the Missouri Bar’s Labor and Employment Law Committee and is a past contributing author for the Missouri Bar’s Employment Discrimination CLE Deskbook.  Cathleen concentrates her practice in the areas of employment law, corporate law and general civil practice.  She has represented employers in federal and state court and before numerous federal and state agencies in discrimination, retaliation and other employment matters.  She also serves as a resource and general counsel for many employers related to everyday employment issues that affect their businesses.  Cathleen graduated summa cum laude from Truman University in Kirksville, receiving a B.A. in business administration and a B.A. in journalism.  In 1996, she received her J.D. degree from the University of Missouri School of Law.  Prior to entering private practice, she was an assistant attorney general in the litigation division of the Missouri State Attorney General’s Office.  Cathleen has given seminars on employment law issues for the Missouri Bar, Associated Industries of Missouri, Missouri Ag Industries Council, Inc., the Council on Education in Management and the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce.  Cathleen also has been recognized by Super Lawyers magazine as a rising star attorney in employment law in Missouri and as a super lawyer in employment law in Missouri.

Curtis Forck, Central Payroll Manager - State of Missouri Office of Administration/Division of Accounting

Curtis has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and has been with the Office of Administration/Division of Accounting for more than nine years.  Curtis has served multiple roles within the Division of Accounting from being a member of the expenditure review unit to a member of the CAFR group.  He has been with the division since his graduation from college.

Come see MOSERS’ newest interactive tool, specifically designed to compare the value of retirement options over time. Members can use the Comparison Calculator to compare retirement plans, retirement dates, benefit payment options, or view the long-term impact of electing BackDROP. These comparisons can be used to better plan for the options available at retirement.

Ryan Toebben, Senior Benefits Counselor - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

Ryan has over nine years of service in benefit administration. He is presently one of the most senior benefit counselors on staff at MOSERS.  He has earned the Certificate of Achievement in Public Plan Policy for Public Pensions through the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plan (IFEBP), and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public administration through Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri. Ryan is eager to demonstrate how new programs at MOSERS can increase understanding and convenience in benefit administration.

JoAnn Looten, Assistant Facilities and Records Officer - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

JoAnn has a B.A. in history and political science from Columbia College and has been actively involved in state benefits for the past 31 years.  She is a Certified Records Manager and Certified Government Benefits Administrator.

Gary Hollis,, Assistant Benefits Officer/Auditor - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

Gary has been employed with MOSERS since March of 1993, and has served in the benefits auditor capacity since June of 1996.  In his role as auditor, he is responsible for making sure each new retiree is receiving the proper amount of their retirement benefit, along with reviewing and drafting new legislation, and assisting the benefits section with various tasks.  In July of 2013, his role was expanded to include supervision of the data integrity specialists (formerly record technicians) to ensure service records are maintained in a timely and accurate manner.

Session: MSEP 2011 Overview

Employees first hired in a MOSERS benefit-eligible position on or after January 1st, 2011 are members of the MSEP 2011. MOSERS knows that explaining the value and benefits of this defined benefit retirement plan can be tricky. When you attend this session you’ll learn the basics of the MSEP 2011 retirement plan and find out about some tools that will assist you in providing information to new employees about their future retirement benefits. 

Katy Lacy, Human Resources Specialist - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

Katy is the Human Resources Specialist for the Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System. Prior to working in HR, she served as an Education and Training Specialist for MOSERS for over two years. She has worked for the state of Missouri and other organizations in training and education for nearly 10 years. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, the Association for Talent Development and National Pension Education Association and holds a Certificate of Achievement in Public Employee Pensions from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans.

Session: MO Café Plan - Benefits Name Game

Join us for a fun, educational presentation on the benefits of the Mo Café Plan!  Learn about any changes to the Plan and how the Plan can save participants money.  The presentation will be conducted in the form of a game – similar to Celebrity Name Game (minus the celebrities, of course!).

Leslie Parisio, Senior Account Manager - ASIFlex

Leslie has 15 years of experience with ASIFlex. Leslie began her career as a customer service representative in 2001 reviewing claims and assisting participants with questions while completing her college degree. After a few years, she was promoted to the accounting department and was eventually given the opportunity to work directly with clients as an account manager. Leslie is responsible for maintaining existing public and private sector client relationships. She is also the day-to-day contact for clients to assist with any issues and compliance questions, and coordinates staff training initiatives. Leslie's expertise is prevalent in all of ASIFlex's products including FSAs, HRAs, HSAs, and Commuter Benefit Plans. Leslie graduated with honors and received her B.S. in accounting from Columbia College.

Jan Jackson, Vice President & General Counsel - ASIFlex

Jan serves as vice president and general counsel for ASIFlex.  Jan holds a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri, and a B.A. in business administration from Stephens College.  She has 20 years of experience in employee benefits, ranging from legal and compliance responsibilities for a self-insured health plan to providing administrative services to employers with respect to their flexible benefits, health plans, and COBRA coverage.  Jan also worked for Central Bank for two years and held various positions at the state of Missouri for more than 20 years.

Kari Less, Second Vice President - Central Bank

Kari serves as second vice president for Central Bank.  She holds a B.A. in business administration from Columbia College.  Kari has 11 years of experience in banking and investments.  She coordinates all cafeteria plan and health savings account services for the state of Missouri as well coordinates all open enrollment meetings.

Total compensation is more than just the dollars deposited into employees’ bank accounts. You know that the benefits of being a state employee are tremendously valuable, but do potential or even current employees get it? Do they understand their benefits and do they use that knowledge in deciding whether or not to accept the job offer? Do they understand what they would be giving up if they leave?  Recruitment and retention are complicated things. MOSERS doesn’t have all the answers but we are dedicated to doing everything we can to make your job easier and helping you leverage the value of the benefits that MOSERS provides. Attend this session to learn about the tools MOSERS has created and makes available to you to help employees understand and value their retirement, life insurance, and long-term disability benefits.

Candy Smith, Communications & Strategic Planning Coordinator - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

As the communications & strategic planning coordinator for MOSERS, Candy leads the team that produces MOSERS’ print and electronic communications. She has been with MOSERS since 2006 and has more than 20 years of communications and public policy experience. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University and a master’s degree from the Truman School of Public Affairs at the University of Missouri-Columbia, graduating with honors. In addition to various other volunteer activities, Candy and her husband, Britt, serve on the board of trustees for National Marriage Encounter and have been active in Jefferson City Marriage Encounter for 21 years facilitating enrichment weekends for couples. They have three grown children (Glenn, Hannah, & Grace) and a border collie (Roxie) who each brings much joy to their life!

Cindy Siemons, Central Payroll Supervisor -  State of Missouri Office of Administration/Division of Accounting

Cindy has bachelor’s degrees in both economics and finance, and accounting, and has been with the state of Missouri for over nine years, the last four with the Office of Administration/Division of Accounting. Cindy has held several different positions within the state, from Internal Auditor for the Department of Revenue to a member of the CAFR group. She has been with the state since she finished her accounting degree.

Session: Deep Dive with Life/LTD Benefits

Presentation

Come learn about the benefits offered MOSERS through Standard Insurance Company.  The presentation will include an overview of life insurance and the additional benefits offered in conjunction with life insurance.  The LTD portion will include an overview of LTD, the claim process and include information regarding the Workplace Possibilities program.  Participation in this program helps to reduce LTD claims, which benefits our employers.  

Brandy Sears, FMLI, Senior Life Benefits Analyst - The Standard (Portland, OR)

Brandy is currently a Senior Life Benefits Analyst, a position she has held since September 2013. She is responsible for investigating, analyzing and making decisions on complex Life and AD&D claims. Brandy joined The Standard in 2008 in the Life Benefits Department as a Life Benefits Examiner and has held a succession of positions with increasing responsibilities, including a short term assignment as a National Accounts Benefit Consultant. Brandy achieved her Fellow, Life Management Institute (FMLI) professional designation in December of 2009.  Brandy joined the MOSERS team in December of 2015.

Scott Ritchie, Senior Disability Benefits Technical Specialist - The Standard (Portland, OR)

Scott joined The Standard in 1992 as a Quality Assurance Specialist, where he was responsible for performing audits of disability claims and review of contested claim decisions.  Prior to joining The Standard, Scott worked for the Social Security Administration, dealing with a variety of disability and retirement benefit claims issues for customers.  Scott managed an LTD benefits team between 1996 and 1998.  In 1998, he became a supervisor in the Disability Management Resources, leading a team of Medical and Vocational Case Managers.  In 2001 he helped develop and managed a dedicated Mental Health Claims Unit.  During this time he also oversaw Standard’s Social Security Disability claims assistance program.  In 2008 he joined the claims team dedicated to TIAA-CREF and other higher education groups as a Senior Disability Benefits Technical Specialist.  He currently fills this same role on the Benefits team supporting MOSERS and other large state accounts since 2011.  Scott joined the MOSERS team as an LTD Account Manager in June of 2015.

Sherri BorgmeyerAccount Manager - The Standard (Kansas City Employee Benefits Sales and Service Office)

Sherri is an account manager in our Kansas City sales office, a position she has held since 2009. She is responsible for servicing large groups in Missouri and Kansas. Sherri joined The Standard in 2000 as an Underwriter. She came to The Standard from Fortis Benefits, where she held various roles during her 15 years of service, 13 of which she worked in the local group sales office as an Account Manager. She is a member of the Greater KC Employee Benefit Professional Association and National Association of Health Underwriters.  She is also involved in The Standard’s Women’s Career Network, BrioLab and MoneySmart employee resource groups.  Sherri joined the MOSERS team in June of 2015.

Everyone knows that saving extra money for retirement is important, but you may not understand all of the surprising benefits offered through the deferred compensation plan.  This session will highlight some of those remarkable features and explain why the deferred compensation plan is more than just a simple retirement savings account. 

Tasha Reinkemeyer, Local Plan Manager, MO Deferred Comp

Tasha has served the state of Missouri employees for 15 years through MO Deferred Comp (formerly State of Missouri Deferred Compensation Plan), is FINRA securities licensed and has five years of banking experience.  Her past work experience, academics, and continuing education have been based around financial education and promoting all retirement resources.

Cindy R. Rehmeier, Manager of Defined Contribution Plans, MO Deferred Comp

Cindy Rehmeier is the Manager of Defined Contribution Plans with the Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System (MOSERS). Cindy focuses on the oversight of three defined contribution plans of which responsibilities include plan administration, investment and education oversight. Cindy joined MOSERS in July 1999 and prior to her current position, she managed the defined benefit plan’s internal short-term fixed income portfolio, all securities lending activity and assisted with external equity and fixed income manager oversight.

 Cindy has received the Certified Financial Planner designation and a Master of Business Administration from William Woods University. She attended Missouri State University and Columbia College graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.  Cindy is a member of Financial Planning Association, a current NAGDCA Executive board Member-at-Large and previously served on the executive board of the Missouri Association of Public Employees’ Retirement Systems for 11 years.

Session: Understanding EAP and ComPsych Resources

HR personnel will discover the vast amount of programs/sessions available through ComPsych, your EAP partner to include:  training hours, application for training, and webinar availability.  The participant will have a better understanding of what the employee has available to them through this EAP vendor.      

Chris Lindsey, Wellness Operations Manager - Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP)

Chris is the Wellness Operations Manager for the Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP), where he is responsible for leading the Strive for Wellness ®Team to operationalize initiatives and strategies of the Wellness Department. Chris works closely with Wellness Program dietitians and nurses on effective delivery of branded MCHCP member wellness and health education communications, and collaborates to assist development of new condition management and population health tools. Chris earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Missouri Western State University with a minor in sociology. He established and administered the first Wellness Program for the Jefferson City Police Department, still being utilized today, and has obtained advanced certification from the Cooper Institute as a health promotion director and fitness specialist and as a Wellness Council of America distinguished faculty member.

Session:  Resilience: How to Keep Going When the Going Gets Tough

Conflict, change, and stress are a regular part of everyday organizational life, and the key to employee survival is resilience.  Being resilient doesn't prevent tough challenges from happening, but it does provide individuals with the strength and wherewithal to recover and keep going.  Developing resilience is a lot like engineering a building to withstand an earthquake.  It requires a solid foundation and a flexible structure that won't crack or crumble under pressure.  This 45-minute session will help you take charge of the challenges in your life by providing strategies to help you bounce back from adversity, build self-esteem, make and maintain connections to build resilience, accept and embrace change, overcome obstacles, and implement stress management strategies to maintain your resilience – all to help you keep going when the going gets tough!   

Lori Davidson, Training Technician, State of Missouri Center for Management and Professional Development

Lori is a training technician with the Office of Administration’s Center for Management and Professional Development.  Lori has over 25 years of experience facilitating a proactive learning environment that provides a foundation for dynamic training sessions and rich learning opportunities.  Lori has a down-to-earth style that is all inclusive, while encouraging ethical and integrity driven insight.  Lori holds a B.A. in criminal justice administration from Columbia College; and certifications from Franklin Covey, The Center for Leadership Studies, and Insights Discovery.  Lori’s mantra is TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More.

Deanna Treu, Director of Professional Development and Recruiting - State of Missouri Department of Natural Resources

Deanna is the director of the Department of Natural Resource’s Professional Development and Recruiting Unit.  She began her career with the state of Missouri over 20 years ago and, during her tenure, has provided learning opportunities to thousands of employees in topics designed to increase their personal and professional success.  Deanna has developed training in over 40 staff development areas, including, leadership, motivation, coaching, ethics and accountability.  She is a certified instructor for Insights Discovery, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, Franklin Covey and QPR.   She has attained Green Belt Lean Six Sigma certification. She earned a B.A. in political science from Stephens College in 1989 and an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1991.  She is the proud mom of Jack and an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America.

Have you read the many communication articles or heard from your employees about the Online Retirement Application Process now available through the member’s secure portion of MOSERS website? While it may be easy to direct employees to the link, it might be frustrating discussing the process without experiencing it yourself. Here’s your opportunity to observe first-hand the online retirement application process and how it works. Members will know exactly when their paperwork has been processed and should know their status in the retirement process at all times. It’s easy and efficient! One click of the mouse and members are directed through the entire process.  Attend this session and I’ll show you just how easy filing retirement paperwork online is.

Andrea Binkley, Assistant Benefits Officer - Missouri State Employees' Retirement System (MOSERS)

Andrea has 14 years of experience in public sector benefit administration in various roles at MOSERS. Currently, she serves as the assistant benefits officer of Benefits Administration and Education. The Benefit Administration and Education staff are responsible for all interactions with the membership regarding all the benefit programs administered by MOSERS. She has earned certificates of achievement in Public Sector Benefits Administration and Retirement Plans through the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBP). Andrea is excited to share the Online Retirement Application Process with human resource professionals such as yourself.

Sarah Young, Wellness Program Dietitian, Sr. - Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP)

Sarah serves as a Wellness Program Dietitian, Sr., at Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan.  She has received a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management, awarded by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Commission on Dietetic Registration.  She earned a master’s degree in family consumer sciences in dietetics with an emphasis in nutrition education from Eastern Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree in human environmental studies in dietetics from Southeast Missouri State University.  She has served with the state of Missouri for the past four years, enjoys the area of disease prevention, and desires to help others meet their nutrition and physical activity goals.

Tanya Miceli, Wellness Program Dietitian, - Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP)

Tanya is a Wellness Program Dietitian at Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan.  She earned a degree from the University of Missouri’s Coordinated Program in Dietetics and received a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management. Tanya enjoys bringing awareness to the simplicity of living a healthy lifestyle along with sharing her passion for food with others.

Session: A Taste of Mental Health First Aid

Presentation

The Taste of Mental Health First Aid session provides an overview of Mental Health First Aid, a groundbreaking public education program that helps the public identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The Missouri Department of Mental Health along with the National Council and the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene are the partnership for MHFA-USA.  MHFA-USA is responsible for the development and promotion of this innovative program.  Since 2008, over 380,000 first aiders have been trained in the United States.

Vickie Epple, Manager of Missouri MHFA and Tobacco Cessation - State of Missouri Department of Mental Health, Division of Behavior Health

Vickie has a bachelor of science and master’s degree in business administration. She has worked in various capacities within the Department of Mental Health over the last 32+ years.  She is currently the Project Manager for Missouri Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for the Department of Mental Health, Division of Behavioral Health. Current duties include the project manager for both Mental Health First Aid and Tobacco Cessation.

Session: Open Enrollment 2017 - Update on Changes in the State Employee Health and Wellness Benefits

Sherri Schwartze, Supervisor of Member Education, Missouri Consolidated Health Care Plan (MCHCP)

Sherri is a licensed health producer that has been with MCHCP for 19 years.  During that time she had the opportunity to work in multiple departments including member services, marketing and communications.  She is currently the supervisor of member education where she works with her staff to plan and deliver the open enrollment presentations, as well as other member contact opportunities throughout the year.
