Death Before Retirement

Q. What happens to my retirement if I die before I start receiving my benefit?
A. If you are a vested member, your eligible spouse will receive a survivor benefit. If there is no eligible spouse or your spouse dies, your child(ren) under 21 will receive a monthly death benefit until he/she reaches age 21.
Q. What if my death is job-related?
A. In the event of a job-related death, you do not even need to be vested for your surviving eligible spouse or child(ren) to claim benefits. MOSERS must be notified of the death to begin processing the benefit. The Division of Labor and Industrial Relations determines whether the death is duty related.
