Change in Public Pension Exemption
With the April 15th filing deadline for the 2007 tax year approaching, MOSERS would like to remind its members of a change in public pension exemption. Married couples with Missouri adjusted gross income less than $100,000 and single individuals with Missouri adjusted gross income less than $85,000, may deduct the greater of $6,000 or 20% of their public retirement benefits, to the extent the amounts are included in their federal adjusted gross income. The deductible percentage of their public retirement benefits will increase until 2012. A breakdown of the yearly percentage is as follows:

Year Limit
2007 20%
2008 35%
2009 50%
2010 65%
2011 80%
2012 and forward 100%

The total public pension exemption is limited to the maximum social security benefit of each spouse. Married couples with Missouri adjusted gross income greater than $100,000 and single individuals with Missouri adjusted gross income greater than $85,000, may qualify for a partial exemption.

More information on the exemption is on the Missouri Department of Revenue’s website.

Coming Soon to a Computer Near You: MOSERS Web Videos!
MOSERS is excited to announce a new and faster way to convey information to our members about their benefits and our retirement plan.
Coming in April, our website will offer educational videos that employees can watch from any computer, at any time. The first videos will feature information that will be useful to new members, or those with just a few years of service with the state. The topics include:
  • Your Retirement Benefit (MSEP 2000 members)
  • Defined Benefit Plan Basics
  • Life Insurance
Look for more videos in the future on other topics and for other audiences. They are convenient to watch, even if you don’t have a lot of time to spare, because they are only a few minutes long and cover general information on each topic. Encourage your employees to bookmark www.mosers.org, look for a topic that they would like to know more about, then sit back, relax and learn!

Building a Better Website
MOSERS is currently redesigning its website. The overall mission of this project is to create an online presence that will better serve our many unique visitors and fulfill the growing demand for electronic communications. As a subscriber of MOSERS' HR Update and a valued visitor of our website, your anonymous responses will be an integral part of the redevelopment. With your honest feedback, MOSERS can work toward building a better website that will continue to serve our members for years to come. Find out more about the MOSERS website project and complete the survey.

Change to Refund Process
MOSERS recently changed our refund process to issue refunds automatically without the completion of a request form. As a result of this change, we will no longer send active employee refund checks to employers, but will send them directly to the employee. This change will decrease the amount of time an employee has to wait for their refund and removes an unnecessary step in the process.

Aged Accounts, Terminated, and Transfer Reports
Your reports are available online in the secure portion of MOSERS’ website. Please go to MOSERS' website and click on the Employer Login section of the site. Use your social security number and employer password to sign on. Once you are signed on, click on the applicable report. Names of individuals responsible for working the reports will appear on the right. You may view any or all portions of the report by clicking on the appropriate name or department. The reports are printer friendly and available online until MOSERS begins processing the next month’s report.
